To know Alsace is to love Alsace

...and holy smokes did we love our visit here last month. This northeastern pocket of France on the border of Germany is one of the most picturesque places on the planet. With a beautiful blend of French and German culture and customs, Alsace is unlike any region in the world, having been tethered so strongly to two different countries throughout history. Alsace is the inspiration of Beauty and the Beast: its half-timbered Hanzel & Gretel-esque architecture, cobblestone streets, and seemingly endless flower boxes really do look straight out of a Disney movie. Alsace is also home to some of the biggest battlegrounds of both World Wars, making it a place of great beauty and great sacrifice.

Okay, but let's get to the best part - THE WINE! Alsace masters more white grape varieties than any other region in France. This is the home of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Dry Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. And if you haven't had whites from Alsace in a minute, let me tell you, I was incredibly surprised with the elegance, finesse, restraint, minerality and lift in every. single. variety. yes. even. Gewurztraminer. no. i'm. not. kidding.

Alsace is also notoriously the absolute best place for Champagne-method wine outside of Champagne, putting out cool-climate sparklers at an unbelievable value.

But what blew me away the most was how incredible their Pinot Noir was. Seriously, some of the best Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy I've ever had.
